Beethoven's 5th Symphony, 1st Movement
In this selection, focus on the role of the strings and wind instruments. Gustave Dudamel is one of the up-and-coming conductors on the music scene. You'll also get a kick out of his hair!!Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, First Movement (REQUIRED)
Maurice Ravel's Bolero
Listen also for the strings and wind instruments. This is also a good example of how a piece of music can be an excellent example of dynamics. The piece repeats the same theme over and over, but it keeps progressing from very, very soft passages to a very rowdy ending. It has great brass and percussion as its focus. It became a very popular piece of music when it was used in the movie 10 starring the beautiful Bo Derek and the gifted actor, comedian, and classical pianist Dudley Moore. Chaminade grad Brian Dennehy got one of his first film starts as a bartender in this film.
Bolero played by Andre Riu's orchestra (REQUIRED)
Fanfare for the Common Man
This selection has been used for the Olympics as a theme song. Brass instruments figure prominantly in it. The French horns start it out, then the other brass enters as well -- all the way down to the low brass of the trombones and tubas. This particular version is way cool! First, the orchestra plays the traditional symphonic piece. When they finish, the same orchestra, now adding in some serious rock guitar guitar work, plays the Emerson, Lake & Palmer version of Fanfare for the Common Man. It's neat to see the different types of music of which the symphony orchestra is capable.
